June 7, 1944: I landed yesterday near Sainte-Mere-Eglise on the DZ O.
Shortly before sunrise, I joined a group of paratroopers who stormed the village under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Krause. We met our first corpse lying on the floor, face against the ground … But he wasn’t a German … It was a paratrooper of the 101st Airborne! When I saw his patch I immediately ran to him to check that it wasn’t James! But what were doing a para of the 101st here in Sainte-Mère-Eglise? This village is the goal of our division!
I joined the West of the village to defend it, few time later I heard Lieutenant Colonel Krause send a message to the Staff, we have fulfilled our objective, Sainte-Mère-Eglise is in the hands of Americans.
